Treatment options for prostate cancer depend on the stage of the disease. Whether the cancer is in stage I, II, III or IV will influence whether physicians recommend watchful waiting, radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, hormone therapy and/or clinical trials. These treatments may be administered individually or in combination. It is important to speak with your doctors regarding the specific treatments recommended for each stage.
When looking at possible treatment options, other things to consider besides stage include age, personal preferences, life expectancy and overall health. Many physicians take into consideration treatment based not just on the identified stage but also chances of recurrence and the patient’s life expectancy.
