Once a diagnosis of mesothelioma is made, it will be staged – at which point the cancer team will discuss and present possible treatment options. In this regard, the extent and location of the tumor (and whether it has spread), personal preferences and overall health are all considered whencoming up with a treatment plan.
Possible treatment options consist of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. These therapies may be administered individually or in combination.
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer and many doctors do not have experience working with patients with this disease. Therefore, patients often are referred to specialists at major medical complexes as these doctors have experience treating significant numbers of mesothelioma cases.
