Some experts in the medical field are joining forces with Google in order to take advantage of the perks of the company. Google is known for providing its employees high salaries, delicious free food and brightly colored bicycles to ride.
And for some people, working for Google is more important than finishing their education.
The headquarters of Google, located in Mountain View, California, is commonly referred to as the Googleplex. Many young people strive to one day work for the technology giant, which many people say is one of the top companies to work for.
Now, medical professionals are the latest group of people to join Google in large numbers. But they aren’t just doing it for the perks. With Google being extremely adept when it comes to data analytics and engineering, the biology and medical teams from the company are some of the most advanced on the planet.
While the company is best known for attracting computer scientists and engineers, Google is starting to make life scientists a big part of its employee population. Their scope is broadening, as Google wants to start producing more miniaturized health devices that can collect medical data better than ever before.
The company is even known for luring people out of school before they can obtain more advanced degrees. Stanford University is located right in the middle of Silicon Valley, and Google has been known for pulling students right out of post-graduate programs and into their company. The technology behemoth can certainly pay more than Stanford University, and in many cases, Google can offer better technology resources.
Additionally, people joining Google have said that they enjoy working for the company because they are able to pursue goals that are applicable to the real world. This is often not the case in academia settings.
But it’s not just Google that is becoming involved in the medical field. Other big name companies such as Apple and IBM are also getting in on the action.
Last March, Apple debuted ResearchKit, which allows researchers to produce apps that work to obtain data from the mobile phones of patients.
Meanwhile, IBM introduced Watson Health last April. Watson Health, and its associated Watson Health Cloud, makes use of IBM’s cognitive computing technology to process extremely large amounts of health-related data to help manage clinical trials.
However, the scope of Google is particularly impressive, as the company reportedly spends more than $1 billion every year on research relating to life sciences.
The life science team from Google is currently working on several projects, such as “smart” contact lenses and a cloud storage data collection program for medical applications. The company is also working with medical companies and academic institutions to further its research.
So while enrolling at MIT or Harvard might be important for some up-and-comers in the medical industry, others are happy to work for Google, where they get paid extremely well to be innovative for the real world.
