The Best & Worst Moments Of The 88th Academy Awards

By most accounts, the Oscars that aired last Sunday evening was a mixed bag. Some moments were wild and exciting, while others left us bored to tears. But overall, it was a pretty good night when all things are considered. Let’s check out some of the best and worst moments from the 88th Academy Awards.

Best: Returning as host for the first time since 2005, comedian Chris Rock did an admirable job. His jokes were aggressive, but fair, and they mostly dealt with diversity issues in Hollywood. It was particularly funny watching the white members of the audience nervously decide how much it was appropriate to laugh at Rock’s race jokes.

Rock’s opening line was fantastic. “If they nominated a host, I wouldn’t even get this job! Y’all would be watching Neil Patrick Harris right now,” he said. This sent us into a fit right from the start. Rock also had some other shining moments, including his revival of the (wo)man-on-the-street sketch from his 2005 hosting.

But outside of the host, there were other hits throughout the night, including Louis C.K. in presenting the award for Best Documentary Short. The comedian had us cracking up. Jacob Tremblay’s reaction when Star Wars favorites R2-D2, C-3P0 and BB-8 came onto the stage was priceless. And we gotta say, Lady Gaga certainly delivered with her performance.

Worst: Unfortunately, there were some stinkers. The thank-you lists that scrolled across the bottom of the screen were utterly treacherous. Most award winners seemed too poised in accepting their prizes, almost as if they were planned ahead of time. There were hardly any tearjerking acceptance speeches that the Academy Awards are famous for.

The lack of clapping when Jenny Beavan won Best Costume Design for Mad Max: Fury Road was quite awkward. The Chris Rock joke in recruiting audience members to purchase his daughter’s girl scout cookies was weird. But perhaps worst of all was the sketch featuring the Minions. Oh yuck, was that annoying. I know they gotta throw something in for the kiddies, but that was atrocious.
