As Baltimore tries to recover from riots and violence that has plagued the city since, a grand jury indicted the six police officers charged in the arrest of Freddie Gray, the state’s attorney for Baltimore City, Marilyn J. Mosby, said Thursday. The officers were in charge of the arrest and subsequent death of Mr. Gray.

At a news conference, Ms. Mosby said the grand jury had returned with a wide range of charges against all six officers and had agreed with an earlier charge, the most serious, against van driver Caesar R. Goodson Jr. That charge was for second-degree depraved-heart murder.

The other officers charged are Lt. Brian Rice; Sgt. Alicia White; Officer Garrett E. Miller; Officer William G. Porter; and Officer Edward M. Nero.

The death of Mr. Gray occurred one week after he was transported by police and brought waves of violence throughout the city. That violence continues to this day, which is why we asked the question: does 1.3 homicides per day mean Baltimore is now safe?
