Deadpool Utterly Dominates Valentine’s Day Weekend

It’s safe to say that Deadpool had a good Valentine’s Day / Presidents’ Day opening weekend. The movie from 20th Century Fox earned roughly $135 million from 3,558 theatres during from February 12th to the 14th. This has shattered the previous record for the best opening weekend during the month of February. The old record was held by Fifty Shades of Grey, which earned $85 million during its opening weekend. Deadpool now also holds the records for the largest amount of ticket sales ever during the Presidents’ Day holiday weekend.

It gets even better for Deadpool, as the move now holds the notable title of the biggest R-rated movie opening ever, surpassing that of The Matrix Reloaded, which earned $91.7 million during its opening weekend run. The opening weekend for Deadpool represents the most successful ever movie opening run for a 20th Century Fox film, surpassing that of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, which had opening weekend earnings of $108.4 million.

In the international scene, Deadpool earned about $125 million from 61 global markets. This brings its weekend total to $260 million, representing an absolutely stunning run for the comic book adaptation. And in IMAX theatres, Deadpool is set to bring in $28 million globally. This kills the previous February record of $6.3 million set by RoboCop.

Deadpool was directed by Tim Miller and written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. The film only cost $58 million to produce, and it has received glorious reviews across the board. Ryan Reynolds stars as the lead character.

While Deadpool was unquestionable the highlight of the weekend, Kung Fu Panda 3 fell to second place, earning nearly $20 million from the 12th to the 14th. Third place went to How to be Single, which earned almost $19 million over the period. Fourth place was Zoolander 2 with almost $16 million. Rounding out the top five was The Revenant, which added $7 million to its total after being in theatres for eight weeks.

Meanwhile, Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens is continuing its run, adding $6.2 million during the three day period. The highly-successful film has now earned more than $2 billion globally.
