A federal judge blocked the deportation of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil as protests erupted in New York City demanding his release.

Judge Stops Mahmoud Khalil From Being Deported

U.S. District Judge Jesse M. Furman ruled that Mahmoud Khalil must remain in the United States while the court reviews his case. His legal team filed a motion challenging his arrest and the government’s attempt to deport him. A detention hearing was set for Wednesday.

Federal agents arrested Khalil, a Columbia University graduate, on Saturday. They claimed he supported Hamas, a designated terrorist organization. However, Khalil’s attorneys argue he was targeted for his activism. His wife, who is eight months pregnant, pleaded for his release.

“I need your help to bring Mahmoud home,” she said. “He should be here holding my hand when our child is born.”

Arrest of Mahmoud Khalil Sparks Outrage and Protests in New York City

Hundreds of protesters filled Federal Plaza on Monday, chanting “Release Mahmoud Khalil” and “ICE off our campuses!” Activists, students, and legal experts condemned the arrest as an attack on free speech.

The Trump administration claimed Khalil’s detention was part of a broader crackdown on pro-Palestinian activism. President Trump stated that his arrest was “the first of many.”

Legal experts warn that Khalil’s arrest sets a dangerous precedent. The ACLU labeled it “a gross violation of constitutional rights,” while the New York Immigration Coalition called it “blatantly unconstitutional.”

The Reality of Israeli Apartheid and Palestinian Colonization

Mahmoud Khalil’s activism is rooted in the long history of Israeli apartheid and the colonization of Palestine. Since 1948, Israel has forcibly removed Palestinians from their land, replacing villages with settlements. The Israeli government has imposed military rule, restricted movement, and enforced discriminatory policies against Palestinians.

This issue is not about anti-Semitism. It is about Israel’s systematic oppression of Palestinians. For over 75 years, Israel has displaced millions, destroyed homes, and carried out military operations that have killed thousands. The international community has condemned these actions, but little has changed.

Activists like Khalil fight for Palestinian human rights, not against Jewish people. The Israeli government’s actions do not reflect the views of all Jews worldwide. Many Jewish activists, including organizations like Jewish Voice for Peace, support Palestinian freedom.

Calls for Khalil’s Release Continue

Protesters vow to keep fighting until Mahmoud Khalil is free. Legal teams argue his detention is politically motivated and violates his rights. Activists warn that if his deportation proceeds, more arrests could follow.

The movement to free Khalil is growing, with petitions, protests, and legal challenges intensifying. As this case unfolds, the fight for justice and Palestinian liberation continues.
