Iran To Soon Allow UN Weapons Inspectors At Its Secret Nuclear Facilities

As the Iran nuclear deal moves forward, UN nuclear inspectors will soon witness Iranian technicians taking samples from one of their key military facilities. This action is part of a confidential agreement between the IAEA and Iran over inspections at the site in Parchin, which is suspected to have been involved in secret weapons tests.

As part of the July nuclear deal, Iran agreed to accept the UN inspections in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Earlier releases of the agreement concerning IAEA inspectors role at the Parchin site stated that they would not be allowed to directly observe, relying only on the statements and samples taken by Iranian scientists. This earlier announcement provided an easy target for U.S. lawmakers who had been critical of Obama’s efforts on the nuclear deal.

The presence of IAEA personnel during the sample acquisition is standard practice for the organization, which also stipulated that cameras be present for the event.

FOX news has widely publicized accounts claiming that Iran would be conducting military site inspections without international oversight. Neither the IAEA, nor Iran’s IAEA representative Reza Najafi would comment further on the agreement between IAEA personnel and his country’s technicians, however.

Until they confirm the inspection conditions, Iran will not receive relief from existing U.S. sanctions.
Even with the lack of a confirmation on the inspection specifics, a vote to derail the nuclear deal failed in both the House and Senate this week as Republicans were unable to secure a two third’s majority in either body.

Important conditions will have to be met by Iran by year’s end, including information about its past nuclear program activities, which may have been military in nature. Specifically, it is suspected that Iran may have conducted hydrodynamic testing at the Parchin site in order to evaluate the strengths of different materials as they were subject to a nuclear explosion.

The Strandbeests Are Coming And They’re Unlike Any Sculptures You’ve Ever Seen

A crowd of more than 10,000 people gathered on Crane Beach in Ipswich, Massachusetts to attend not a rock concert but rather the preview “display” of a museum exhibition – the Strandbeests.

This is the first major exhibition in which Strandbeests have been displayed in the United States, but the creations already have a massive following.

Strandbeests are the brainchildren of Dutch artist Theo Jansen. Each Strandbeest is a horse-sized apparatus constructed from zip ties, clear packing tape and ivory-colored PVC tubes. In building these structures, Jansen combines these materials and creates a wind-powered “beach animal” that walks along the ground. Each creation resembles that of a dinosaur skeleton that has come to life.

Thanks to YouTube, the kinetic sculptures have gained a large, devoted international following. Some of those fans can see the Strandbeests up close at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, which will house the exhibit. The turnout for today’s preview appearance simply astonished museum officials. Not only were there 10,000 people surrounding the exhibit on the beach, there were also fans in boats getting a glimpse and drones buzzing by taking photographs.

As fans gazed at the creatures in awe, something exciting happened. With a gust of wind, one of the beests began moving as its sail propelled it forward. At first wobbly, it soon picked up some speed, began walking and amazed the crowd.

Trevor Smith, the exhibition’s curator stated that, “You feel empathy toward it. The videos embody this dream of perpetual motion, but the beests themselves are temperamental. They require care. There’s a sense of fragility that deepens your appreciation of the creative process, and you see the drive and follow-through required to make a dream a reality.”

The large museum acknowledges that hosting the exhibit is quite the coup. Smith, whose official title is “curator of the present tense” proffers that, “The culture of our time is too important and impacts us in too many ways to reduce it to a genre of ‘contemporary art.’ That term still conjures up this idea of exclusivity that is counterproductive, if what we want is to get people to think about the role of creativity in their own lives.”

Jansen’s work combines old-fashioned mechanics with art and cutting-edge engineering. Smith points out that Jansen has wanted to bring the beests to America for a very long time, “but he wanted to bring them in a way in which people could engage with the complexities of the work.”

In describing today’s display, Strandbeest fan, Ayfer Ali, exclaimed that, “It’s a different form of life!”

The exhibit will open at the Peabody Essex on September 19th and will involve four active beests. The museum’s staff acknowledges that it will be somewhat of a challenge. Francesca Williams, the museum’s registrar of exhibitions states that the active creatures are the primary attraction and that the exhibit is “as much a performance as an exhibition because the end result changes every time.”

New High Tech Filter Aims To Cut NASA Astronauts’ $250,000 Per Day Water Bill By Recycling Urine

When you gotta go in space, it’s a little different than back on Earth. Not only is the process ‘involved’ but what’s waste to your body is a valuable commodity. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station this week tested a new filter which provides them with a more efficient way to drink the water from their urine.

While it may seem unpalatable it’s actually a vital piece in the puzzle of getting astronauts to and from Mars.

The new distillation method, which was developed by Danish biotech company Aquaporin A/S, utilizes proteins to pull clean water from urine, swear, wastewater, condensation, and other precious liquids that are accessible in space.

The filter works the same way you kidneys do.

The new system consists of two tubes connected to a source of energy. A half gallon of pee is transferred from one container through the filter and into the other container in less than one minute. Astronauts are praising the device for being small, lightweight, and unlikely to become clogged.

Drinking distilled urine is nothing new as Astronauts have been reliant on the practice since 2009.

Existing methods are already extremely efficient and able to recapture 93% of their wastewater.

However the current system is slow, heavy, and prone to breakdowns. The current system spins urine at high speeds to separate the water vapor, which is then treated chemically. Using this method, astronauts have been able to recycle an astonishing 6,000 liters of water per year.

Impressive as that may be it is still not enough water to sustain a crew of multiple astronauts over a long period of time. Astronauts are hopeful that the new system will function in a more efficient manner.

Ensuring that astronauts have enough water to drink is extremely challenging.

Water is weighty, used up rapidly, and costly to bring into space. Currently, it costs $10,000 per pound in order to put a spaceship into orbit. A gallon of water weighs eight and one-third pounds.

That’s more than $83,000 for one gallon of water!
Even by limiting astronauts to three gallons per day, NASA still spends nearly $250,000 per day per astronaut on water alone. With NASA looking to travel to Mars, recycling water has become a huge concern.

NASA has been teaming up with Aquaporin A/S since 2011. The two groups have been testing prototypes in laboratories. They have been seeking a protein membrane that is simple, lightweight, and reliable for usage in their filtration systems.
European Space Agency astronaut Andreas Mogensen is currently at the International Space Station testing out the new filters. Mogensen plans to filter three different urine samples while he is at the space station. There are also plans to bring the water back to Earth in order to have it properly analyzed. If everything checks out, astronauts can expect that the new system will be put to use very quickly.
Aquaporin also hopes to use the device in places where clean water is scarce, such as developing countries and areas experiencing heavy drought.

New Models On Sea Level Change Point To Nuclear Energy As Only Solution To Stopping Arctic Ice Melt

If it were possible to burn the Earth’s remaining reserves of coal, oil, and natural gas, the entire Antarctic ice shelf would melt, raising the world’s oceans by over 190 feet. While you shouldn’t put up your beach property for sale just yet, the finding continues to confirm that the Earth faces rising sea levels if fossil fuel consumption is not curbed.

The advanced computer models were recently published in the journal Science Advances.

Those living near shore today are already noticing a gradual rise in sea levels, but a drastic rise such as that described in the new report would lead to the displacement of around one billion people.

Climate scientist Anders Levermann commented on the current status of the ice, “The west Antarctic ice sheet may have may already have tipped into a state of unstoppable ice loss, whether as a result of human activity or not. If we want to pass on cities like Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Calcutta, Hamburg and New York as our future heritage, we need to avoid a tipping in east Antarctica as well.”

The western ice sheet only makes up some 10% of the total mass of Antarctic ice, with estimates of a 16 foot rise in sea levels if it were to totally melt.

According to a January study published in the journal Nature, it was estimated that staying within the United Nations goal of under 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit of warming would result in a “manageable” level of sea rise. This would require that one third of global oil reserves, half of natural gas reserves, and over 80% of coal remaining unused.

In the face of increasing industrialization by the world’s most populous countries the targets appear ambitious. It clear that current sources of renewable energy fall dramatically short of world power requirements.

According to NASA’s chief climate scientist, James Hansen, nuclear is the only solution. In a troubling sign following the Fukushima disaster of 2011, Germany vowed to close all of its nuclear power plants by 2022.

It is worth repeating that only three major accidents have occurred over the history of nuclear power: Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima. The first of these did not result in any harm to humans, and the remaining two are from designs that are now decades old. New plant designs have greatly increased safety, thereby lowering the possibility of an accident from operator error.

In the oil industry deadly disasters happen regularly, though it is usually wildlife and not people that bear the brunt.

There are currently only a handful of new nuclear plants under construction in the U.S., but many more appear needed if rising sea levels are to be meaningfully curbed.

China Becomes Latest Country To Accuse Apple Of Tax Avoidance

The Chinese Government has accused Apple of tax avoidance and accused the company deliberately underreported its sales revenues in the country. The timing of the announcement has been questioned by some China watchers who say it is ironic that it has come at a time when Apple was releasing its’ latest iPhone into the Chinese market.

Tax authorities from China’s Ministry of Finance released documents which show Apple underreported its 2013 Chinese sales revenues by $1.3 billion.

According to Chinese media reports the Government last year went on a blitz against tax avoidance, closely inspecting the books and accounts of 1358 major accounting firms and 20,635 large companies, including Apple Computer Trading (Shanghai), Apple’s Chinese subsidiary.

A Ministry of Finance spokesman said the inspection of Apple Computer Trading’s accounts revealed the company had avoided paying $70 million in taxes by underreporting its sales revenues.

He said Apple had been ordered to make up the shortfall which it had done to avoid fines.

Apple has not responded to media requests for comment.

China University of Political Science and Law professor Shi Zhengwen said Apple’s alleged tax avoidance highlighted the fact that reform was needed in China to reduce tax avoidance by companies like Apple, and to increase compliance.

Apple’s Chinese market – which includes mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong – is its’ second biggest after the America’s with “reported” revenues of $13.2 billion in the third quarter of this year.

This revelation of avoiding taxes in China, adds to a growing list of accusations of tax avoidance by Apple. In 2014, The European Commission sought to limit an agreed deal between Apple and Ireland to drastically lower its tax bill for its European Union sales.

According to Irish media reports Ireland will, within the next few months, face censure by the Commission over the issue.

Last April Apple executives defended the company’s financial operations and accounting practices before an Australian Senate hearing, after Australian officials had described the company’s financial practices as “international tax avoidance”.

New York City To Raise Minimum Wage To $15 An Hour

New York State could be the first state to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour thanks to intensive lobbying by state governor Andrew Cuomo. The state is set to implement gradual increases in the minimum wage of its employees and if everything is approved, the state will raise the bar for other states in the U.S. to treat their workers with far greater dignity with regard to compensation.

On Thursday, Cuomo announced before a Manhattan crowd full of union workers that he would be overseeing the gradual increment of minimum wage for fast food workers to $15 an hour by 2021. The governor of the U.S.’s third largest state also said he would work endlessly to ensure the target was achieved across all industries in New York.

Cuomo said, “Every working man and woman in the state of New York deserves $15 an hour. We’re not going to stop until we get it done.”

Vice President Joe Biden, who was in attendance, said Cuomo’s move would have far reaching effects in the country’s wage policy going forward. He said, “You’re going to make every single governor in every single state in America look at themselves. It’s going to have a profound impact.”

Though some analysts predict the move may end up hurting the state’s economy by taking away control from the market forces of demand and supply, others have been more empathetic to the idea, even drawing parallels between it and what Henry Ford did in the early 20th century.

Ford, in 1914, famously raised the wages of his workers to $5 a day while reducing their daily work hours to 8 hours a day, from 9 hours. Analysts then predicted his move would “get riddance to Henry Ford of his burdensome millions” and “may return to plague him and the industry he represents, as well as organized society.”

However, the exact opposite was achieved: higher productivity and higher revenues.
In 1914, $5 had the same buying power as $1119.32 today, approximately $15 an hour for an 8 hour working day.

Already, many cities across the country are overseeing minimum wage increases. Joining the bandwagon of increased minimum wages, Los Angeles, Seattle, California and San Francisco also have approved phased increases in their minimum wage to eventually get to $31200 a year ($15 an hour).

President Barack Obama’s administration has maintained it seeks to raise minimum wage to $12 an hour. Unions are pushing for $15. Through the combined efforts of union workers, policy makers and state officials, low wage workers in the U.S. will get an opportunity to earn a decent income from their work.

Trump Buys Miss Universe Stake From NBC As Focus Shifts To White House Bid Full TIme

Donald Trump has bought NBC’s stake in Miss Universe and is selling it to talent agency turned production company WME/IMG for an undisclosed amount. Trump’s dalliance with NBC in and out of the courtroom has occupied a great amount of the Republican presidential candidate’s time and money. The new deal is Trump’s exit from the prolonged battle that will allow him to focus entirely on his White House bid.

Trump appears to be betting on himself to take the White House and is, as ever, putting his money where his mouth is.

Trump tweeted Friday morning that he had just bought NBC’s stake in the Miss Universe title. He tweeted, “Just purchased NBC’s half of The Miss Universe Organization and settled all lawsuits against them. Now own 100% — stay tuned!”

Bloomberg had announced that negotiations between Trump and WME/IMG were underway as the company made a bid for the pageant. WME/IMG had expressed interest in owning 100 percent of the company rather than a portion of it. Trump’s full ownership and willingness to sell may be their only door to getting the coveted title.

Kyell Thomas, head of entertainment at Octagon, said of the sale, “At the end of the day, Miss Universe is a media property. There aren’t too many properties that come up that have name recognition and global scale.”

No indication was given as to the pricing of the entire pageant. The sports and entertainment marketing expert also said valuing the property could be difficult as no such property had been on sale in a long while.

Trump ended his decade long partnership with NBC after he made derogatory remarks about Hispanics in June when announcing his bid for the presidency. Trump labeled Mexicans “rapists” and threatened mass deportations once he was president.

NBC, irked by the sentiments, said at the time, “Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump. To that end, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, which are part of a joint venture between NBC and Trump, will no longer air on NBC. In addition, as Mr. Trump has already indicated, he will not be participating in The Apprentice on NBC.”
The billionaire businessman’s lawyers threatened legal action should NBC fail to air the Miss Universe USA Pageant. His team also filed a $500 million suit against Univision for not airing the contest in Spanish for its millions of Hispanic viewers.

The announced settlement between Trump and NBC could not have come at a better time since the Republican front runner appeared on Friday’s episode of the “Tonight Show” on NBC.

Return Of College Students Met With Rash Of Sex Offenders Claiming To Be Uber Drivers

You might want to think twice before making your next request for a ride from Uber. During the past month, there have been two reported instances of unsuspecting women being kidnapped by phony Uber drivers, in what is becoming a dangerous phenomenon.

Police in Florida arrested Antonio D. Warren on August 30th after he picked up a college student at Tallahassee Community College outside of her dorm room. Warren claimed that he was a driver from Uber, but actually he had no ties to the company. Warren drove around before exposing himself and demanding sexual acts from the woman. The woman fled from his vehicle, but Warren proceeded to chase after her. He was able to inappropriately touch her before she escaped.

Another incident took place on September 8th, as a man disguised as an Uber driver attempted to pick up two female students outside of Texas Christian University. He informed the women that he was with Uber and that his intended fare had been cancelled, and he offered the women a ride. After the women entered his vehicle, the man began making offensive conversation, and he hugged one of the women before dropping her off. The man never requested payment for the ride, which led the women to believe that he was not actually an Uber driver.

The Uber app features some safeguards against this type of abuse. Upon requesting a ride, the driver’s image, license plate number, and car make and model are given to the user. Thus, the stranger becomes somewhat less of a stranger. However, abuses have been known to occur from certified Uber drivers as well. In some cases, sexual and/or physical assaults have occurred.

Younger women traveling alone are said to be most at risk for receiving such abuse. While Uber might be an ultra-convenient way of getting around, users should stay vigilant in order to prevent from becoming a victim.

Russia Now Supplying Syria With Advanced Surface To Air Missiles As The Country’s Presence In The Middle East Continues To Grow

Russia is sending troops, weapons, fighter planes and now an advanced anti-aircraft missile system to Syria according to a Russian source and two Western officials on Friday.

They say the move is part of Russia stepping up its support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has faced a string of military losses in recent months.

The Western officials said the advanced SA-22 system would be operated by Russian military personnel and not Syrians, though this is largely due to the training required to operate the sophisticated system..

“This system is the advanced version used by Russia and it’s meant to be operated by Russians in Syria,” said a Western diplomat who receives regularly briefing on Israeli, U.S.  and other intelligence assessments as part of his duties.

A U.S. official also confirmed the information about the missile system shipment, which according to Russian sources is the second time Russia has sent the SA-22 system, known in Russia as Pantsir-S1, to Syria. The first shipment was in 2013.

Syrian officials have yet to comment.

The U.S., European and regional allies, which have been leading air strikes over Syrian airspace in attacks on ISIS and other extremist Islamic terror groups, are now concerned about the introduction of advanced anti aircraft weapons, the diplomat said.

Although Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia was sending military equipment to Syria to help the Assad government combat Islamic State fighters, experts says the sending of anti-aircraft missiles would not support that claim as neither Islamic State nor Syrian rebel groups have any aircraft.

Even if Russian troops controlled and operated the missiles system, the fact it was in Syria is of concern to Israel, which in the past has bombed sophisticated arms it suspected were in the hands of Hezbollah, Assad’s Lebanese guerrilla allies.

The diplomatic source said “In the Middle East you never know what will happen. If the Russians end up handing it the SA-22 over to the Syrian military, I don’t think the Israelis would intervene but they would go bananas if they see it heading towards Hezbollah in Lebanon.”

An Israeli military spokesman, although not commenting on the missile system shipment, said the country would continue its policy of stopping advanced weapons reaching Hezbollah.

“We have open relations with the Russians who have come to save Assad in the civil war. Along with this, we will not allow our sovereignty to be compromised or the transfer of advanced or chemical weapons (to Hezbollah). We are following the developments and keeping open channels with Moscow.”

Germany Confirms Radical Islamists Are Attempting To Solicit Syrian Refugees For Terrorism

Fears that Syrian refugees flooding into Europe were easy recruitment targets for Islamic extremists were given weight on Friday by warnings from the German domestic security service following the country’s leading Islamist preacher publishing a list of suggestions on how best to approach refugees.

Pierre Vogel, a former professional boxer and Islam convert, described as “Germany’s most influential Salafist preacher,” – an ultra-conservative branch of Sunni Islam – called on his followers to seek out new recruits at shelters set up for refugees.

Vogel told his followers to take donations and gifts with them when volunteering to help with the refugee influx.  He also said they should seek out newly arrived refugees at mosques.

Vogel has publicly denounced terrorism and violence as being contrary to the teachings of Islam, and has denied any links to jihadist groups, but in June German police raided a house where he had been living and arrested a suspected jihadist hiding inside.

German security has also claimed Vogel met with another alleged jihadist, currently on trial in Germany, just before the man travelled to Syria to join ISIS. In 2011 he tried to arrange public funeral prayers for Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

According to German authorities, The Office for the Protection of the Constitution is watching 30 mosques and keeping tabs on 1,900 Islamists suspected to have links to extremist groups.

A spokesman for the refugee centres said: “The staff recognize the behaviour, codes and clothing of the Salafists, and report the incidents” , with most of the “incidents” believed to have taken place the Germany’s most heavily populated state, North Rhine-Westphalia.

According to a spokesman for the state government, Jorg Rademacher, “It’s still not a mass phenomenon,”  but there “had been clear proselytizing” by Islamists “warning” newly arrived refugees against Western values.

Google Splits Its Wallet App In Two As Competitors Apple, Venmo And Paypal Gain Traction

In an effort to secure its market position in the ever more competitive mobile payments industry, Google has essentially split its Google Wallet app into two apps: a modified Google Wallet and the new Android Pay. The search giant hopes to legitimately compete with payment options such as Apple Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and PayPal.

The new Google Wallet, which launched a few days ago, is a peer-to-peer payments platform that has only feature: the ability to transfer money to a Google account from a person’s bank account, debit card or Google Wallet balance. While this function previously was available in the Google Wallet app, it will not be available in the Android Pay app.

The reboot of the Google Wallet app likely means that it is not phasing out the app and transitioning to just Android Pay, but rather strongly focusing on both apps.

The new Google Wallet may face competitive challenges as it is basically Google’s version of Venmo or Square Cash. The question becomes whether users of those services will make the switch to Google Wallet. And furthermore, will those who used the old Google Wallet because of its NFC capabilities (i.e., a form of wireless communication that allows the flow of information between two devices) simply switch to the new NFC capable Android Pay? The answers to these questions remain to be seen.

Despite its possible challenges, the new Google Wallet is designed to be very user-friendly, and it makes it quite easy to send money to a friend, family member or other peer. The new Google Wallet also lets a person manage his or her Wallet Card. The card connects to a person’s account and allows him or her to pay anywhere that a debit MasterCard is accepted. It even can be used at an ATM machine.

With respect to Android Pay, Google announced that it reached deals to get the service into greater than one million locations throughout the United States – including Walgreens, Whole Foods and Macy’s to name a few.

The Android Pay app will also store loyalty cards and gift cards on mobile phones powered by Google’s Android software.

Google hopes that the reboot of Google Wallet and the launch of Android pay will be smashing successes and allow the search company to keep up with its competition. As smartphone payments are expected to grow to $188 billion by 2018, Google hopes to stay relevant and cash in on some of that growth.

Ageing Population, Longer Work Weeks Mean South Korean Grandparents Now Charge As Much To Babysit As Professional Sitters

Grandparents in South Korea are being increasingly sought to babysit their grandchildren as parents are forced to put in longer hours at the office. Traditionally this service would be paid for by the grandparent’s children but partly due to widespread poverty among the elder generations pay rates have begun to approach those of professional babysitting services.

Childcare classes have also become more common due to the rising numbers of grandparents seeking out the information. Song Geum-re, who teaches one of the classes, explained the rise in attendance, “They’re very eager to learn modern-day childcare because so much has changed from their time, and they don’t want to be looked down on by their children.”

Pay rates for grandparents in the past were as low as one third of those for professional services. However, adult children also used to provide more financial support for their parents outside of the business of babysitting. Because there is currently a dramatic shortage of daycare services available, the demand for the services of these grandparents has become more valuable.

According to numbers from 2014, there were 11 children for every daycare spot available among private babysitting services, and for government daycare facilities that number was 47 to one. This leaves the grandparents to make up the difference. Families who relied on the grandparents to do the babysitting rose from about 32% in 2009, to 35% in 2012. Of those who regularly performed the service, around 80% were paid, according to a survey by the Gyeonggido Family and Women’s Research Institute from 2011.

South Korea has the world’s fastest aging population in the world, coupled with a record share of women in the workplace. Government statistics put the number at 53% of women, but this proportion is low compared to European countries.

With government data showing 49% of those 66 and older living in poverty, the increased pay rates have also been accompanied by stricter policies among some grandparents, who cut off services at specified hours.

China Is Breaking International Conventions And Creating A Special Army Division Dedicated To Space War

Once seen as science fiction, the concept of space wars is becomingly altogether real. As more and more satellites are launched into space and as countries realize the vulnerability of those satellites, militaries across the globe are preparing for the new frontier of potential space warfare.

In fact, a recently announced plan to reform and upgrade China’s People’s Liberation Army includes the reduction of the country’s military strength by 300,000 troops as well as the creation of a “celestial military” to increase China’s strength and capabilities in space warfare.

The decision to create this new division comes at a time when satellite communication is more essential than ever to modern day warfare.

Specifically, satellites play crucial roles in the United States military’s ability to defend the nation and fight wars, and rival countries – such as China. The military relies on satellites – from communications to GPS to early warning systems. Rick Fisher, senior fellow with the International Assessment and Strategy Center proffered that the United States has a fundamental dependence on its satellites, “and these have been targeted systematically by China.”

Just prior to China’s military revamp announcement, top officials at the United States Space Command and the United States Air Force warned of increasing threats from the Chinese regime. Specifically, Air Force Lt. Gen. Jay Raymond confirmed that China had successfully tested an anti-satellite missile as recently as July 23, 2014. He also declared that, “soon every satellite in every orbit will be able to be held at risk.”

The Pentagon echoes this sentiment by stating in its 2015 annual report to Congress on China’s military and security developments that, “China possesses the most rapidly maturing space program in the world.” This is supported by the fact that China has tested several space weapons while consistently telling the public that it was testing “something else.”

The most notorious of these tests was in early 2007 when China launched a rocket and destroyed one of its own satellites. Today, however, its space weapons have gone far beyond rockets to include directed-energy weapons and satellite jammers.

Dr. Robert J. Bunker, research professor at the Strategic Studies Institute of the U.S. Army War College stated that, “China’s development of anti-satellite weapons is both provocative and highly disruptive to international space relations.” He likened China’s focus on space warfare to its focus on cyber warfare. Both “could be utilized against a technologically superior U.S. military.”

The Pentagon’s report states that China’s development of weapons that disable and/or destroy satellites are “inconsistent with China’s public statements about the use of space for peaceful purposes.” In fact, the Pentagon points out that China’s military writings “emphasize the necessity of ‘destroying, damaging, and interfering with the enemy’s reconnaissance … and communications satellites.’” The Pentagon surmises that China may be targeting navigation and early warning satellites, for programs “designed to ‘blind and deafen the enemy.’”

Rick Fisher, senior fellow with the International Assessment and Strategy Center notes that space warfare is the most direct path for China to compete with the United States militarily. Rather than trying to face off against the U.S. Navy and Air Force, China could just build some space planes, specialized missiles and several platforms to send to the moon.

Tickets For Sold Out Trump Mega Rally Already Fetching Over $200 A Pair

Donald Trump’s mega rally in Dallas on Monday is a hot ticket. So hot, in fact, that thousands of people quickly snapped up free tickets upon their Friday release, leaving diehard Trump disciples out in the cold.

The Republican presidential candidate ‘sold’ out the 20,000-seat American Airlines Center through Ticketmaster yet some are already making their way to online marketplaces where they’re fetching stunning prices.

Pairs have already been spotted going for over $200.

The sellers appeared savvy to The Donald’s popularity and even marketed the tickets using Trump’s own slogan. “Two tickets for the Donald Trump’s Rally on September 14th. Make America great again!” an Ebay posting Friday evening read.

The tickets seem to be most easily available on Craigslist and Ebay as online ticket marketplace StubHub does not permit the sale of free tickets.

The massive yet exclusive engagement is precisely the type Trump is aiming for. Its also the kind that are impossible for his competition, perhaps aside from Hillary Clinton, to attract. Trump has eschewed traditional grass roots, town-hall-style politicking in favor of massive venues packed to the rafters in order to capitalize on his celebrity status and make efficient use of his time.

If the market for Trump tickets is anything to go by it appears The Donald is solidly in command of the GOP race and perhaps even the 2016 election.

A Game Changing New Study On Blood Pressure Found Such Important Results It Was Released Early

A landmark new study has shown definitively that lower blood pressure, much lower than the current recommended 140 level, can save lives and prevent a host of lifestyle diseases.

Contrary to popular belief, where lower blood pressure has been speculatively linked to cardiovascular disease, scientists are now saying lower blood pressure is the key to living a longer life after 50.

A recent study had 9,300 adults over 50, who had high risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, aim for much lower blood pressures of below 120 millimeters of mercury on the systolic measure.

The current recommended lowest level is 140 millimeters, 20 millimeters more than what the doctors in this study recommended.

Initially, doctors slated the study to end in 2017. However, after recording valid and impressive results, they chose an early release as the information gathered could “potentially be life saving.”

The study found that the participants who were assigned to reach systolic levels of below 120 had their risk of heart attack, heart disease and stroke reduce by a third while their risk of death reduced by over a quarter.

Dr. J. Michael Gaziano, professor of medicine at Harvard medical school said the research was outstanding. He said it could “shake things up” in the medical world the same way the discovery of low cholesterol being better had done before.

Up to 79 million adults in the U.S. suffer from high blood pressure. That amounts to one in three adults. Half of those being treated still have high systolic pressure of above 140 and are being advised not to go below 140. The new research will provide a different narrative with regard to blood pressure for these patients; going low is actually good for your health.

Previously, no evidence existed showing low blood pressure reduced the risk of heart disease. Doctors therefore urged patients over 60 to maintain a blood pressure above 150. It was not always easy to reach these goals. Those urged to reach 140 took two drugs on average while those with a target of 120 took an average of three drugs. Thankfully, most of these drugs are available as generics and are therefore affordable.

The heart institute is also studying the effects of lower blood pressure on the kidneys and brain. Medics have urged patients not to panic after word on the new study broke out. According to the doctors, there was no need for an abrupt change of treatment as high blood pressure takes its toll slowly.

The new study ushers a new age in preventive healthcare for adults over 50. Through lowering blood pressure, the patients will be able to live longer more fruitful lives, rather than live prone to cardiovascular complications.

Hungarian TV Station Goes Off Air Following Migrant Kicking Incident

Kicking migrants does not make for good television. Just ask one Hungarian TV station that was taken off the air after their camerawoman kicked and tripped migrants who were fleeing from the police. As of Friday evening the TV station is still off the air.

The website for the TV station blames hackers for the outage.

N1TV, also called Nemzeti TV, claimed in a Facebook post that hackers from a Turkish internet address had deleted their entire website, including the archives and correspondence of the station.

The station’s editor-in-chief Szabolcs Kisberk said that the Tunsian Muslim hacker group called Fallaga Team was responsible for the attack. The Fallaga Team has been linked to information security attacks in the past, but there is currently no evidence that they are involved in this particular case.

Former camerawoman and migrant-kicker Petra Laszlo had written an open letter of apology, expressing that she regrets her panic-driven behavior. Laszlo has since been fired from the right-wing news station. Multiple videos feature Laszlo kicking a girl and tripping a man carrying a child while hundreds of immigrants run away from police. The act occurred on Hungary’s southern border that it shares with Serbia.

Laszlo claims she was panicked as the immigrants began running toward her, and she was only trying to protect herself.

Laszlo said in her letter, “I honestly regret what happened. I am practically in shock from what I did, and what was done to me. I am not a heartless, racist camerawoman who would kick children. I am a woman, a mother of small children, who has since lost her job, and who made a bad decision in a panic.”

The government of Hungary has adopted a tough stance on the flow of immigrants across its borders. The immigrants are typically attempting to reach Western Europe. Hungary describes the immigrants as a threat the prosperity of Europe and Christianity. So far this year, over 170,000 migrants have entered Hungary. Many of these migrants are refugees from the conflict in Syria.

Hungarian police have been attempting to collect the immigrants in order to register them, as per European Union rules. However, the migrants often refuse because they fear that they will be forced to remain in Hungary rather than traveling to Germany or Sweden.

Doctors Figure Out Why Americans Pay $10,000 Per Vial For Snake Antivenom While Mexicans Pay $100

Researchers have finally figured out why antivenom in America is one of the most costly medicines despite retailing for a few hundred dollars in neighboring Mexico.

Every year, 100,000 people die in the world from snakebites, according to Doctors Without Borders. Close to 8,000 Americans are bitten by snakes inside the U.S. alone. The biggest hindrance to their recovery is the cost of antivenom. In Arizona, patients can pay as much as $2,300 for a single shot of antivenom. The total treatment, which includes multiple shots, runs into tens of thousands of dollars.

Leslie Boyer, director at the University of Arizona’s Viper Institute, stated in an article published in the American Journal of Medicine “We were crestfallen to discover…that the chosen wholesale price for this otherwise excellent drug was set too high to be cost effective, even in the treatment of critically ill children…Somehow, a US drug whose sister product retailed in Mexico at $100 was resulting in bills to Arizona patients of between $7,900 and $39,652 per vial.”

Making antivenom is no complex task. The process involves injecting sheep with the rattlesnake venom and harvesting antibodies from their bodies. The antivenom is then processed in labs from the antibodies and retailed at insanely high prices, raising questions as to why.

Through drafting the whole process of making the medicine, from the farms all the way to the labs and finally the pharmacy shelves at the hospital, Boyer developed a price model showing exactly how much was added at every stage to the overall price.

Boyer revealed that while the cost of actually making the antivenom including research, animal care and antibody harvesting was significantly low (0.1 per cent), fees such as licensing, regulation and medical facility profits contributed 27.7 per cent.

However, the real thorn came in the form of hospital markups on insurance which contributed 70.1 per cent to the final cost.

Boyer wrote that depending on one’s insurance, medicine prices such as antivenom or Advil can fluctuate drastically. Boyer noted that a snakebite victim in North Carolina may pay up to $5400 in antivenom treatment while one in Arizona only pays $347, despite having the same insurer. For those without cover, the figure runs into the hundreds of thousands.

Antivenom is becoming exorbitantly expensive for a majority of Americans and insurance is the culprit. Insurance companies and hospitals need to work together to determine a suitable pricing model that will benefit the ordinary citizens lest more Americans die of treatable snakebites from lack of health care.

The Directors Of The CIA, NSA And FBI Just Put On A Masterful Display Of Public Relations And Absolutely Nobody Bought It

The directors of the FBI, CIA, and NSA put on an elaborate display of public relations on Thursday in a thinly veiled attempt to con the American public into giving up their basic rights so the country’s police industrial complex can do its job more easily.

Attendees, increasingly spied upon and tracked, appeared less than won over by the charm offensive.

At the intelligence and National Security Summit, officials from America’s security organizations took the stage in order to address a variety of issues, including what they claim is unfair public opinion against their organizations. They repeatedly claimed that the negative public opinion against their groups make it difficult to do their jobs.

In a remarkable display of wordsmanship, CIA Director John Brennan called the negative public opinion a “misunderstanding” regarding the United States Intelligence community.

He then went on to say, with a straight face, that the negative opinion of the agencies was the result of people who are attempting to undermine these organizations and enemies of the state.

FBI director James Comey made the near laughable claim that it was “impossible” to conduct a rational discussion about a variety of issues due to “venom and deep cynicism.”

He specifically singled out his own personal efforts to abolish the idea of encryption by giving the FBI a method for gaining backdoor access to encryption on any computer device.

Yet the disingenuous stance flies in the face of Apple CEO Tim Cook who has publicly voiced support for strong encryption in his company’s signature iPhones in order to protect hard won individual privacy rights.

Tech companies in general have been deeply resistant to public attempts by America’s three letter agencies to include back doors in their products that skirt the need for judicially reviewed search warrants and instead provide law enforcement and intelligence with unfettered access to America’s most private moments.

While Comey went on to say that “I don’t think we’ve really tried to find answers yet because no one in the private sector has been properly incentivized,” his remarks fly in the face of economic reality that diametrically opposes this position.

Ever since whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed the vast, extrajudicial, spying apparatus of the NSA, which included access to virtually all data that crosses American wires, tech companies based in the U.S. have found it increasingly difficult to do business overseas.

China, Russia and even supposed allies like Germany have all become deeply distrustful of American tech companies, fearful that U.S. authorities will have complete access to any systems offered by tech leaders.

Contrary to Mr Comey’s statement the economic realities show the incentives are already in place: Nobody wants pervasive spying and they’re willing to pay not to have it.

A recurring theme of the PR offensive was how “difficult” the jobs of intelligence and law enforcement have become. NSA Leader Admiral Michael Rogers claimed that revelations, such as the Edward Snowden incident and WikiLeaks, have made his job more difficult. Rogers called for a collective dialogue about the role of the intelligence community, though what precisely he meant by the remark was not obvious.

The NSA operates the largest computing cluster in the world, is completely unaccountable for any of its actions and has a crack team of legal acrobats carefully papering its activities in case the dirty details come to light.

The evidence clearly shows the NSA operates as it pleases and does not engage in two way “collective dialogue.” Any such notions are merely an attempt to distract and confuse: Rogers’ agency wants all your data and they want it easily.

While the heads were carefully prepared for their close-up with the public, whom they increasingly view as an adversary, they failed to deliver answers when asked reasonable questions.

Rogers was asked how the NSA could obtain the trust of the public. The NSA leader both dodged the question and denied its premise, stating, “I don’t think we have fundamentally destroyed the public’s trust. Some feel that way, but we are accountable to the citizens of the nation, and the nation is counting on us. The nation needs the insights we generate and our computer expertise.”

When asked about the openness of the intelligence agencies several questions were met with moments of awkward silence by the talking heads.

It was clear the agencies were not “open” enough to answer some simple questions.

One such instance occurred when Rogers was asked what was America’s top threat. Rogers claimed to be “frustrated” by the question, stating “The answer changes every hour.”

Despite a spectacular display of question dodging and vocal complaints about the opinion of the public, one truth did emerge from the show.

America’s intelligence agencies deeply distrust the American people and positively abhor the idea of judicial oversight.

They want to get on with their jobs, easily, with no regard for the rule of law or the implications their actions have on hard-won American rights and freedoms.

The display highlighted that the American people would be well advised to reciprocate this deep distrust until such a time these agencies truly embrace the concepts of openness and accountability.

The Next Wave Of Cyber Attacks Will See Data Carefully Changed Instead Of Stolen Or Destroyed

The biggest threat of cyber attacks faced by the United States is not stolen data but rather data that has been manipulated according to the Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

In written testimony to the House Subcommittee on Intelligence today Clapper said “Most of the public discussion regarding cyber threats has focused on the confidentiality and availability of information; cyber espionage undermines confidentiality, whereas denial of service operations and data deletion attacks undermine availability,” he wrote.

“In the future, however, we might also see more cyber operations that will change or manipulate electronic information in order to compromise its integrity (i.e., accuracy and reliability) instead of deleting it or disrupting access,”

“Decision making by senior government officials (civilian and military), corporate executives, investors, or others will be impaired if they cannot trust the information they are receiving.”

Clapper told the committee Russia’s Ministry of Defense is establishing a cyber command, “which according to senior Russian military officials will be responsible for conducting offensive cyber activities.”

Clapper’s concerns were backed up by NSA Director Admiral Michael Rogers, who also testified, when he said “the use of cyber for manipulative, destructive purposes” is an increasing and unacceptable threat.

Cyber security experts say the largest cyber attacks so far this year have involved data theft, with 21 million personnel records hacked from the Office of Personnel Management. China was found to be behind the attack.

Another attack saw 4,000 records containing “sensitive” information being stolen from U.S. Joint Chiefs civilian email system, which was traced back to Russia.

Records obtained under the Freedom of Information Act also show that, between 2010 and 2015, hackers managed to enter Department Of Energy networks 159 times.

Experts say that information about critical infrastructure, such as that contained in the hacked Energy Department data, would be most attractive to hackers wanting to manipulate data.

They say the long awaited and much debated Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act of 2015, currently before the Senate Intelligence Committee, is meant to help prevent cyber attacks by encouraging companies to supply information on data theft, network attacks, data manipulation and loss to The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) which will coordinate the information before passing it on to the NSA, FBI and other security agencies.

But at today’s hearing, Committee Chairman David Nunes, questioned if the DHS was capable of doing it’s part effectively, noting the department’s Protected Critical Infrastructure Information Program hadn’t been audited since 2006.

“This raises serious questions about an Agency that many government representatives believe should be at the heart of our cyber security strategy” said Nunes.

In 2014 over 800 pages of sensitive information related to critical infrastructure was released accidentally by DHS under a bungled Freedom of Information request.

New Pentagon Report Finds That Iran Killed Over 500 U.S. Soldiers During The Iraq War

The U.S. military has affirmed that 500 American soldiers were killed during the war in Iraq by Iranian involvement as was widely proclaimed by the Republicans. The revelation, coming weeks after President Barack Obama concluded a nuclear peace deal with Iran, will complicate relations between the two states.

On Thursday, CENTCOM revealed that the speculated 500 number of Americans killed was not entirely inaccurate. The military said that more than 300 U.S. soldiers were killed by Iranian devices while another 196 died specifically due to Iranian made explosively formed penetrators.

A majority of the estimated 500 deaths occurred after then President George W. Bush sanctioned an influx of more than ten thousand troops to confront an imminent sectarian civil war.

Many of the deaths reported were attributed to improvised rocket assisted munitions (IRAM). The devices were described in a recent Joint IED Defeat Organization paper as “a rocket-fired improvised explosive device made from a large metal canister — such as a propane gas tank — filled with explosives, scrap metal and ball bearings and propelled by rockets.”

The IRAM, essentially an airborne roadside bomb, was “the signature weapon used by Iranian-backed militias that operate with the aid of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Group.”

Prior to the report the U.S. military had capped the Iran attributed death toll to 196. It was not until July when the first military confirmation of the high death toll would be affirmed by Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford. Dunford told a confirmation hearing, “I know the total number of soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines that were killed by Iranian activities, and the number has been recently quoted as about 500. We weren’t always able to attribute the casualties we had to Iranian activity, although many times we suspected it was Iranian activity even though we didn’t necessarily have the forensics to support that.”

However, skeptical military analysts have said the number may be higher than the 500, given the nature of devices involved.

David Bolgiano, a retired Army Special Forces officer who served in Iraq in both 2006 and 2007 with the Joint improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization, said, “It’s very difficult to quantify because, when you have an IED explosion that occurs in theater, you’d have to connect the dots and say, ‘Well, we have three U.S. casualties tied to that IED,’ and then that IED is tied to a specific copper-plated EFP from Iran. Often times, those forensics are missing.”

Iranian improvised explosives were the cause of death for hundreds of Americans in Iraq. The recently signed peace deal that will see decades of sanctions lifted on the Middle East country may have been concluded but it will be a long while before Americans can reconcile with Tehran.

Russia Is Building A Massive New Military Base Next To The Area It Stole From Ukraine

News that Russia is building a military base near the Ukrainian border shows the President Putin led Kremlin is preparing for a prolonged standoff with its Ukrainian counterpart according to experts.

According to documents obtained by the media, the base will contain barracks for 3,500 soldiers; ammunition depots for artillery, rockets, and other munitions; a 50 bed infirmary capable of being expanded in case of a “massive influx of wounded”; and even a barber shop, swimming pool and skating rink.

Local resident Alexander Panchenko, whose home overlooks the construction site said “They are building a military town.”

Reporters who approached the site earlier this week were told by workmen erecting a fence to mark off the construction area, which is only 15 miles from the Ukrainian border, to leave the area, and accused them of being spies.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on media questions about the base and whether it had any connection with the Ukraine conflict.

Russia has been accused by NATO in the past of using temporary bases to send soldiers and munitions to support pro-Russian separatists into Ukraine, a charge which Russia denies.

Documents published on the Russian government website zakupki.gov.ru, show the military base is being built on a 300-hectare site near the town of Valuyki, with the initial construction phase being completed in April, 2016.

A representative of the Federal Agency for Special Construction which manages Russian defense installation projects, would not answer reporters questions about the work at the site, saying only that it was “a secret facility.”

Experts say that because Russia is no longer a member of the treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe, which limits the deployment of troops in Europe, it is able to move any amount of troops and weapons to its Western border.

Although fighting between Ukraine forces and Russia has died down and there is a truce in affect, its longevity is under threat as both sides have not reached an agreement on the withdrawal of troops and weapons from disputed areas.

New Survey Finds Americans Get A ‘D’ Grade In Science

Americans average a D when it comes to science, says a new study. Though the U.S. is known for a host of scientific breakthroughs in nuclear weaponry and space technology, very few Americans can score an above average in a science quiz.

According new research by Pew Research Center released Thursday, most Americans score just a “D” in basic science. The researchers quizzed 3200 adults on basic scientific questions. The questions ranged from high school physics to biology, geology and astronomy.

Results indicated that from the 12 questions, those who took the test averaged 7.9, just 66 percent.

A majority of those polled could identify the earth’s core as its hottest part (86 per cent) and also identify uranium as the chief element used in the making of nuclear weapons (82 per cent).

However, only 35 per cent could identify amplitude as the factor chiefly responsible for determining the loudness of sound. A lesser 34 per cent correctly figured that water boiled faster at higher altitudes than at sea level.

More shocking was that one in five Americans confused astronomy with astrology. More than 22 per cent defined astronomy as “the study of how the positions of stars and planets can influence human behavior.”

According to American Association for the Advancement of Science chief executive Rush Holt, “It may not be important to know that the core of the Earth is hotter, but it is important to know the difference between astronomy and astrology. It is important to know that science is based on evidence and that their daily decisions on daily life can also be based on evidence.”

Holt said what he found truly troubling was the demographic performance breakdown. Men scored higher than women, people with college degrees scored two points higher than those with only a high school education. Whites fared better than blacks and Hispanics, people aged between 30 and 49 scored the highest while those below 65 scored lowest.

Westerners performed the best while Southerners were the worst performing. On average, Republicans scored half a correct answer more than Democrats. Not a single group got 12 or even 11 questions correct.

Americans have failed in basic science even though the nation prides itself in being one of the top technological hubs on the planet. What is clear is that more emphasis on science is needed to make more Americans involved in the field.

The Amazon Of China Just Entered The Business Of Sports And Nobody Knows What To Expect

Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba’s foray into sports has sent tongues wagging across the globe. The owner of Asia’s largest marketplace has expressed interest in dominating multiple spheres of online industries, with sports being its latest conquest.

Investors are now wondering whether the company is biting too much too soon and whether its expansion will result in loss of consumer confidence in the quality of their services.

Alibaba’s announcement on Wednesday that they would be entering the sports business through a new company, Ali Sports, sent ripples across the business world. The new company has a diverse ownership with Alibaba owning 55 percent, Yufeng Capital and Sina each control 12.5 percent while the new company’s management wraps up the board with a 20 percent stake.

Jack Ma, Alibaba founder and chair, recently said the company sought to invest in happiness and health going forward. According to the billionaire, sports is where the two meet. Ma said the company aimed at transforming China’s sports industry via modern internet enabled technologies.

The company did not reveal in detail the specific sports business they would be following.

However, a statement by the company said, “Alibaba Sports Group expects to integrate e-commerce, media, marketing, video, home entertainment, cloud computing and other Internet-enabled technologies to form a sports platform that will participate in different aspects of the professional sports industry, including sports copyrights, sports media, events, ticketing, etc.”

Sports in China has been a major focus for a majority of sports clubs, personalities and companies. Something Alibaba may want to cash in on. The company owns 50 percent of Guangzhou Evergrande, one of mainland China’s largest soccer clubs. Alibaba also has signed partnerships with sports clubs Bayern Munich and Real Madrid where it sets up online stores for retailers. Last month, the company partnered with NBA star Kobe Bryant to distribute his feature length documentary “Kobe Bryant’s Muse” and also to market several branded products.

Alibaba has been in an aggressive investment mode that has seen the company develop more ventures under its wing beside sports. Only a few weeks ago the company launched its video streaming service a la Netflix while simultaneously taking up a stake in the latest “Mission Impossible” film.

Alibaba did so through a partnership with Paramount where the company will distribute the movie in China and supervise its online ticketing and promotional work. Investors are now wondering whether the NYSE listed company is taking in more than it can chew.

According to Bloomberg analyst Adam Minter, “For now, this is a China play. This is all part of the massive content grab that the big Chinese Internet companies are in the midst of.”

Alibaba is growing leaps and bounds. Through venturing into China’s sports industry, the company seeks a share of the country’s growing sports market while netting in tidy revenues for the company. Investors may either reap big from the new venture or fall flat.

Apple Faces Backlash Over Role Of Women In Its Yearly Product Unveiling

By “fixing” the smile of a woman in its yearly product unveiling earlier this week, technology behemoth Apple has been accused of sexism. The act occurred while demonstrating the new iPad Pro, when Adobe’s director of mobile design, Eric Snowden, edited an image of a woman in order to digitally manipulate, or “fix”, her mouth so that the woman appeared to be smiling.

Snowden said to the crowd at hand that he wished the woman had “more of a smile” before proceeding with the image manipulation.

While the audience applauded at the time, it was not long before accusations of sexism began quickly rolling in.

One twitter user wrote, “Now Adobe can literally “Fix” pouty women for you. Way to go guys!”

Other users critiqued both Apple and Adobe for not thinking through the situation better.

Many people believed that the situation was reminiscent of men asking women to smile. This demand is often considered to be demeaning and rude by women. Founder and CEO of Women in Technology International, Carolyn Leighton, said that while she doubts anything malicious was intended, she believes that the photo subject was a poor choice.

Leighton said, “It just triggers this feeling that so many people have. It’s just like when these companies put men in front of the camera instead of women. People are out of touch with the fact that women are equal partners in the field.”

The criticism continued to pour in from there.

Spectators soon brought up the fact that only three women were featured in the presentation but only one of the three women was an employee of Apple.

Meanwhile, more than ten men were included in the demonstration.

Critics also complained that the woman that was present talked about shipping, a relatively unglamorous and low-level role. It’s also worth mentioning that at an Apple even in June of 2014, no women presented.

Vice President of Government Relations at the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Lisa Maatz was also disappointed by the lack of female representation. She stated, “We need role models. To have Apple’s big launch only featuring a few women, doesn’t give girls an encouraging message about technology being a future career.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook said in an interview earlier this year that the failure to reach out to women lies with the tech industry as a whole. However, he admitted that greater diversity was required.

A report from the AAUM indicated that only 26% of jobs related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are held by women. In 1990, women held 35% of such jobs. Meanwhile, a report from last year showed that seven out of every ten Apple employees were male. But Apple is taking steps to improve the situation, as the company says that it has hired 11,00 women over the past year, which is a 65% increase from the year prior.

Goldman Calls For $20 A Barrel Oil Due To Weak Demand And Global Oversupply

Due to the consistent decline in oil prices week after week, Wall Street heavyweight Goldman Sachs has had to modify its price forecasts for the commodity as it does not appear that price support is anywhere in sight.

While the decline in oil prices is good for consumers, in the form of lower gas prices, lower airfares, reduced home heating costs, it is not necessarily good for the global economy as a whole.

The problem is simply a case of supply and demand. With respect to oil, there is a major oversupply and increasingly less demand. Essentially, the world’s surplus of oil is even greater than Goldman Sachs initially thought and the trend could lead to a major drop in oil prices to just $20 per barrel.

In a statement the company said that, “The oil market is even more oversupplied than we had expected and we now forecast this surplus to persist in 2016 on further [Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (“OPEC”)] production growth, resilient non-OPEC supply and slowing demand growth, with risks skewed to even weaker demand given China’s slowdown and its negative emerging market feedback loop.”

The company further stated that, “We now believe the market requires non-OPEC production to shift from our prior expectation of modest growth to large declines in 2016. The uncertainty on how and where that adjustment will take place has increased.”

The sources of stress on the industry include an abundance of oil coupled with a lack of storage space. Goldman estimates that the oil industry added approximately 240 million barrels of petroleum to available storage tanks between January and August of this year.

The company projects that available storage capacity (outside China) is about 375 million barrels coupled with an inventory build of about 240 million barrels.

Goldman further elaborated that “In the event that storage fills faster than we forecast or capacity is lower than we model, the potential downside to our oil price forecast from hitting storage capacity is significant.”

Given the current situation, Goldman modified its one-month, three-month, six-month and 12-month oil price forecasts to $38, $42, $40 and $45 per barrel. Those figures are down from its previous predictions of $45, $49, $54 and $60.

Additionally, the company modified its 2016 average price forecast from $57 down to $45 per barrel.

Study Finds Humans Keep Dying From Bad Habits Despite Knowing The Risks

Despite advances in both awareness and medical science, people of the world are behaving badly and engaging in risky activities. So much so, in fact, that the rate of deaths related to avoidable health risks has increased by 23% since 1990.

According to a recent study, more people are dying from preventable causes such as high blood pressure and smoking than ever before.

Scientists reached the conclusion that a range of 79 various health dangers led to 30.8 million deaths in 2013. This is a stark increase of more than 5.7 million deaths from 1990, and that even takes population growth and ageing into consideration.

The study’s coauthor at the University of Washington, Ali Mokdad, said “To put it in plain English, we are behaving badly. I mean we know very well that smoking kills and that blood pressure is another killer. Nobody risks not changing the oil in their car, but nobody pays the same attention to their own body.”

High blood pressure was the leading cause of preventable deaths, with 10.4 million deaths in 2013. Smoking was good for second place, and obesity was the third leading cause of death. High blood sugar levels and heavy sodium intake rounded out the top five.

Diet choices were found to be a big reason as to why more people are dying in such a manner. The study discovered that diets high in red meat and sugary drinks while being low in fruits and vegetables represented 21% of deaths in 2013.

Meanwhile, malnutrition in children and dirty drinking water were no longer in the top 10 most lethal risks. That being said, having a lack of food still resulted in 1.3 million deaths of children, and it was the leading cause of mortality for children under the age of five. Sub-Saharan African countries such as Chad, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia were particularly plagued by this issue. For poorer countries, childhood malnutrition remains a major concern.

Gender was also found to play a role in an individual’s likely cause of death. Smoking was discovered to the second most likely preventable death in males, with 4.4 million deaths in 2013. However, the number for females was roughly two-thirds lower.

Alcohol was a top ten risk for men, but this was not the case for women. Consuming foods high in salt content was found to be a greater concern for females than it was for males.

Causes of death also varied by region. The Middle East and Latin America struggled with obesity. India had problems with unclean water and childhood hunger. Russia showed concerns with alcoholism. Wealthier countries such as Great Britain often featured a smoking epidemic. Africa had an array of issues including childhood malnutrition, dirty water, unprotected sexual intercourse, and alcohol.

Chinese Internet Giant Tencent Just Released A Robot Reporter And Chinese Journalists Are Freaking Out

Journalists in China, who historically have had a difficult time doing their jobs because of heavy censorship and control by the Government, have now had another worry added to their plates – fears their jobs could be taken over by robots.

The fears arose as Tencent, the Chinese social media and gaming giant, announced a robot had written the company’s latest business story in a “flawless 916 word article” released via Tencent’s instant messaging service portal QQ.com.

Chinese reporter Li Wei, who is based in Shenzhen, said “The piece is very readable. I can’t even tell it wasn’t written by a person,”

The business report, written in Chinese, was produced by robot journalist Dreamwriter, and reportedly only took one minute to produce. Dreamwriter specializes in covering financial news with ease.

Although ‘robots’ in the form of computer software have been producing basic newspaper articles and reports in the U.S since 2012, the news of a robot reporter in China, which has very limited media freedom, has created waves of anxiety.

Chinese media experts reported that news of Dreamwriter’s achievement sent “local reporters scurrying to the bathroom as they envisaged the end of their careers.”

The reporters fear that because robots can be adapted to understand and produce Chinese-language reports, and because robot reporters have now been adopted by one of China’s most influential internet companies, it could signal the beginning of a new era in terms of what or who produces news.

“I’ve heard about robot reporters for a long time, but thought they only operated in the United States and Europe,” reporter Wei said. “I’m not ready to compete with them yet.”

A Chinese reporter from Guangzhou said “You know, many reporters working for government-run newspapers across the country usually copy and paste the statements and news press. They are not allowed to express doubt or really investigate reports against the authorities. So robot reporters could easily replace a lot of Chinese reporters like this nationwide.”

The First American F1 Team In 30 Years Is Already Shaking Things Up Across The Grid

New American Formula One racing team Haas F1 is already shaking things up after rival teams have expressed anger over its partnership with F1 legend Ferrari.

The partnership between the two is a thorny issue for many rival teams as F1 strictly prohibits the entry of “customer cars” into racing. Each team must create their own and cannot just buy a completed car from someone else.

For Haas and Ferrari, so similar are their cars and driving, the only visible difference between the two cars will be their body chassis.

Ralf Bach, on his website the F1 insider, said the two parties were collaborating efforts to skate as close as possible to the current rules forbidding “customer cars.” However, that the two are the same unit, could not be any more visible, even for a newcomer to F1.

American outfit Haas already has deep ties to Ferrari as it sponsors the team through machine tool company Haas automation.

Haas will be receiving basically everything that can be legally bought from the rival turned partner. The exchange comes after the two crafted a 2016 technical partnership and engine supply deal.

Haas team boss Gunther Steiner said through F1’s official website, “Of the teams that came into the sport in the last decade only one is left, so we thought it through and came up with some quite different ideas. You cannot do more of the same if the recent past has shown that more of the same doesn’t work.”

With the whole body borrowed from Ferrari, Haas embarked on a search for its 2016 driver and who better to do the job than someone as knowledgeable and experienced as a Ferrari driver.

Despite pressure to put an American at the wheel recent comments by owner Haas pointed to Ferrari reserve Esteban Gutierrez as the first man behind the wheel.

Asked about whether Haas was a Ferrari-B car, Steiner said, “It is difficult to say percentage-wise, but it is going in that direction. But don’t get me wrong, we still build our own chassis and bodywork.”
What the partnership shows is that owner Gene Haas, already a NASCAR legend, is deadly serious about being competitive in the pinnacle of motorsport. His strategy shows a deep understanding of both the technical and business side of motor racing and means that when the team launches next year American fans are going to have something to legitimately cheer for.

Move Over Rover, NASA’s Working On A Radical Space Exploring Hedgehog

Stanford’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in collaboration with MIT have conceived of a new means of asteroid exploration, modeled after a Hedgehog. The prototype robot does not need wheels, legs, or conventional means of locomotion. It instead relies on an internal series of flywheels that can be accelerated or decelerated to cause inertial reaction movements in order to get the robot where it needs to go.

Recent tests on the cube have involved its performance in a microgravity environment, which is similar to what it will encounter on its planned missions to asteroids, comets, and similar bodies.

Because the gravity on these objects is so small when in space, wheeled transport does not have sufficient traction, along with the constraint that the wheels must be facing downward in order to work.

The same problems apply to a design using legs, so the team behind the Hedgehog went with a cube-based design containing three “reaction wheels.” Because the cube is symmetrical, there is no right side up to maintain when landing on an asteroid, or comet. Again, due to the low gravity on its proposed missions, the internal reaction wheels will be able to generate enough torque on the Hedgehog to cause it to jump great distances, when needed.

It is easy to envision a scenario where the Hedgehog could land in a depression on the surface of a comet or asteroid, requiring it to launch itself to a more favorable position with sunlight exposure in order to power its solar panels.

Marco Pavone of Stanford commented on the progress of their design, “The general strategy is to make this ready for flight, at least in its most basic configuration, fairly soon, so that whenever a flight opportunity arises, we can raise our hands and say, ‘look, we have an option here with a secondary payload to dramatically increase your science with a minimal cost.’” With the modular design of the Hedgehog, it is a relatively simple matter to mix and match the desired instrumentation for a proposed mission.

Study Finds Pornography Viewers Are Actually More Respectful Towards Women

While many people in recent years have complained that watching pornography causes negative attitudes about women, a recent Canadian study has found that this is not actually the case.

In fact, typical viewers of adult entertainment might actually possess more favorable views toward women than non-viewers.

Researchers at London, Ontario’s Western University stated in a paper that pornography enthusiasts might even be “useful allies” in helping women fight for equality in work, income, and public office.

Predictably the paper is already receiving intense criticism.

The study unequivocally challenges the widely-held belief that watching pornography is damaging. The leader of the study and post-doctoral fellow in psychology Taylor Kohut said, “I’d rather not live in a culture where our government, lawmakers decide to regulate, outlaw behaviour or material because they assume it’s harmful. I’d rather they demonstrate it is, first.”

The study examined data that was obtained from 35 years of the General Social Survey. The survey interviewed roughly 24,000 men and women on a variety of issues on an annual basis.

The results showed that 23% of people who watched pornography in the last year were no more or less likely than abstainers of porn to identify as feminists or voice support for the traditional family.

Surprisingly, porn viewers expressed more positive attitudes towards women in positions of power on average. They also showed fewer negative perceptions about abortion and women in the workplace.

However, some anti-porn academics are challenging the study, claiming that it goes against the vast majority of research in the area. Sociology professor at Boston’s Wheelock College, Gail Dines, said, “The easy and free access to often-aggressive sexual clips on the Internet has spawned a ubiquitous new porn culture that is warping young men’s sexual behavior and attitudes as never before.”

Dines continued, “Maybe some of these guys do believe in abortion more, maybe they do believe women should hold office more, but they still want to ejaculate on the woman’s face and they still want threesomes and all that. Men have less interest in actual sex with a real woman; they want to act out the porn sex.”

Dines also questioned the validity of the study, since the average age of respondents, 45, is not representative of teenagers and young men.

Yet the era of the internet has shown an increase of indicators of male aggression, as instances of rape and domestic violence have become more commonplace, despite questions over whether it’s porn related or more a derivative of increased communication in society at large.

However, other individuals believe that the new study is congruent with the current literature which offers an unclear picture on the effects of pornography. While some studies focus on the negative impact of porn, others suggest that it can actually be positive.

Psychology professor at Texas A&M International University said, “Any tiny effect that porn is having is being washed out by a lot of other, more important things. I think if porn were going to ruin society, it’s already had 20 years to do it, and it’s not happened.”

Kohut mentions that the once widely-held view that pornography is a malignant force has been largely dismissed by society. But controversy is still present. The moralistic arguments of prior generations have been replaced by notions that porn promotes “women hating”, or a sense that women are objects of sexual exploitation for men. However Kohut argues that there exists almost no empirical data to support such a viewpoint.

According to Kohut, the study offered insights which go beyond just simply male attitudes. The study suggested that female porn viewers were equally egalitarian as others. This goes against the common belief that pornography trains women to simply accept subjugation.

Kohut also stated that the results might be somewhat explained by the fact that watchers of pornography are typically more liberal individuals, and non-watchers are usually more likely to be socially conservative or religious.
