While Yahoo Signs Celebs, Google Aggressively Ramping eSports TV

Google is known to be a data driven business. Virtually every decision the search giant makes across all its product lines is supported by rigorous data analysis. Competitors like Netflix are also known to do the same, carefully observing what users do to build products that they find pleasing. This is how we know, for instance, that Yahoo grossly overpaid for the rights to stream the first NFL football game on the web. Given that both Google owned YouTube and Netflix took a pass on the game, we know Yahoo overpaid - likely by a decent sum. The same can probably be said for Yahoo's decision to hire Katie Couric, who didn't exactly have big web TV companies beating down her door to procure her services. Yet Google and Netflix are hardly sitting still, as Google on Friday confirmed plans t...

2016 Set To Be The Year Of Virtual Reality

Virtual reality has been around for nearly 40 years in some shape or form. From cardboard blue and red glasses of the 80s to the virtual reality programming languages of the mid-nineties, the technology has long been hailed as game changing. Yet it's never really caught on. Motion sickness has caused people to try it once and never return, while clunky displays and virtual reality worlds that look anything but convincing have further reduced the appeal of the technology. This all appears set to change next year. Facebook owned VR company Oculus VR announced this week that its much anticipated headset, the Rift, will hit the market during the first three months of 2016. Until now, the company has only sold developer editions that were targeted at video games creators and were not the p...

Huge Magazine Publisher To Launch Virtual Reality ‘Magazine’

Virtual reality, finally, is set to become a big thing. Tech companies - from Facebook to Sony to Google - are all investing significant dollars into high end virtual reality technologies that will provide real-world type experiences in the comfort of your living room. That future took a major step forward this morning when privately held Conde Nast, best known as the publisher of magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair and GQ, will begin publishing what are essentially virtual reality magazines. Conde Nast Entertainment (CNE), the company's film, television and video division, will unveil two original virtual reality series for the upcoming year at its Tuesday presentation before advertisers at Newfronts, an annual digital media showcase held in New York City. The company is keeping tight...

Virtual Reality Experiences Help You Remember More

In research that somewhat validates the tech industry's recent obsession with virtual reality headsets, researchers discovered that people who receive instructions for a task remember them better when they are accompanied by a virtual reality experience. The team, from the Human-Computer Interaction Lab and based out of Ital's Udine university, published their findings in IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. But virtual reality was not the only thing the researchers did to help people remember more. Instead they employed an element of fear, scaring the users and effectively giving them a 'teachable moment' using the VR goggles. These experiences are called immersive serious games, combining game elements with reality. In their experiment, the researchers used an av...
