Is Caitlyn Jenner’s run for Californian governor about celebrity or transgender equality?

Last week Caitlyn Jenner announced her candidacy for Governor of California. Many are speculating that this is merely a publicity stunt and not about bringing equality to the transgender community.

If elected, Jenner, who is a Republican would be the first transgender governor of California. In the past, Jenner has made several statements that question what she truly stands for.

Caitlyn Jenner’s history of indecision

In 2015, on Ellen, she said she was “lukewarm about marriage equality” and later retracted that statement. In addition, she supported Donald Trump in his presidential run of 2016.

Trump famously pushed an anti-LGBTQ+ agenda. Before his second run for president, Jenner withdrew her support from Mr. Trump. Later in 2016, spoke against Trump’s stance on gay marriage. On 20/20 she said “I am 100% behind gay marriage, let’s clear that up right now.”

Of course, everyone is allowed to change their mind and adapt. However, in her position and status, it begs the question of “is this authentic”?

The New Caitlyn Jenner

June of 2020, Jenner told People that she had “changed her political views” and that she now identifies as “economically conservative, socially progressive.”

She stated that “she believes we need equality for all, regardless of who’s in the White House.”

Jenner publicly criticized Trump’s decision to reverse transgender access to public school bathrooms on Twitter. In a short video tweet, She called it a disaster and directed him to call her.

What Now?

Well, many Americans have called Jenner “too controversial”.

LGBTQ+ advocacy group, tweeted “Make no mistake: we can’t wait to elect a #trans governor of California. But @caitlyn_jenner spent years telling the #LGBTQ+ community to trust Donald Trump. We saw how that turned out. Now she wants us to trust her? Hard Pass”.

Jenners run for governor is clouded with speculation and concern. In addition, the excitement pales in comparison with Maryland’s Sarah McBride who was the first trans elected to a state Senate seat. Or that of Stephanie Byers of Kansas who has become the first trans Native American to win a set in state legislature.

Both of which are well qualified candidates and had support from the LGBTQ+ community. Jenner has never held elective office and her own voting record has come into question.

Only 9 out of 26 statewide elections since 2000 has Caitlyn Jenner voted. It turns out, she didn’t voted in the 2016 election that gave Donald Trump the presidency.

Final Thoughts

It is important to remember we are at a time when transgender people are still fighting for equal rights.

More than 28 states are pushing anti-trans bills including banning medication, prohibiting trans-children from playing on sports teams and even threatening doctors prescribing medications with jail time.

Not to mention that research suggests that, internationally a transgendered person is murdered at least once every three days.

More trans representation in the government is important. However, is Caitlyn Jenner the right choice for governor and to represent the LGBTQ+ community?
