On Friday, July 31st a 22-year-old Florida Surfer encountered a shark off the Volusia County coastline. Marking this the 4th bite of the year, 22-year-old surfer found her foot chomped while on her surfboard around 5 pm that evening. According to the Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue, the surfer did not see the shark. It is unknown what type of shark bit the young surfer, but luckily the bite is not life-threatening and she will make a full recovery.
The county has seen similar bites before, and maybe something to be cautious of given the time frame of incidences. A week earlier an 11-year-old boy was also bitten on the foot in the same location, New Smyrna Beach. The boy was in waist-deep water at the time and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
With Shark Week coming up, stay tuned for the Discovery Channels annual programming devoted to bringing awareness, education and misconceptions about Sharks. In hopes that people and sharks can share the waters safely.
