Unfortunately, there is no cure for psoriatic arthritis. Therefore, treatment focuses on reducing the main symptoms of the condition by controlling inflammation of the affected joints in order to prevent or reduce pain.
The primary method of treatment of psoriatic arthritis is the administration and prescription of drugs specializing in reducing inflammation, including both over-the-counter and prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Physicians may also prescribe disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) which can slow the progression of the disease and may be able save joints from permanent damage. Immunosuppressant drugs may be prescribed in order to “calm down” the immune system, which is in overdrive in those individuals with psoriatic arthritis patients. Another type of drug that may be included in a comprehensive treatment plan is known as a TNF-alpha inhibitor which can reduce stiffness, swelling and pain.
