Is aromatherapy safe for children? The use of essential oils not only safe for kids but also effective for many different reasons. Here is how you can use aromatherapy for your kids!

Aromatherapy is a combination of two Latin words; ‘Aroma’ meaning fragrance and ‘therapy’ meaning treatment. This ins’t a new method, it has been around for over 6,000 years!

Its first uses were in ancient civilization as aromatic plants were used for healing and therapies. However, it has become increasingly popular in today’s society.

This treatment approach uses the fragrances of essential oils. The essential oils and their scents have calming, healing effects on the body and mind.

Babies of six weeks can recognize the scent of their mothers. The physical connection formed through a hug, smile or a kiss on cheeks from their parents can be nurturing for kids.

Gentle massage on their feet, hands, back, abdomen and legs with essential oil has therapeutic qualities. It is important to note, some essential oils shouldn’t be used in direct contact to skin for babies or adults. An additional way to use essential oils safely is with a diffuser. 

Different essential oils have a different impact on our bodies. Before beginning aromatherapy massage, ask your general physician about the effects of the essential oils you intend to use.

An even better option is to ask an aromatherapy expert. You may also do some basic research on the internet before using essential oils.

What are common uses of essential oils?

Insect Bites and Itching

Lavender is a great oil for treating bug bites. Unlike most oils, lavender can be applied directly to a bite. It soothes and relieves pain.

Soft and Tone Skin

Add a few drops or rose or geranium oil to you shower gel, bath or even face cream for hints of hydration. Additionally, these oils can be used in massages to moisturize and tone the skin.

Hair Loss 

Chamomile is very soothing and detoxifying which is great for the hair follicles. Not only does it relieve and itchy scalp it can stimulate regrowth as well.

Peppermint has also been said to help remedy hair loss. It improves blood flow, which increases circulation and can potentially improve hair growth.

Dandruff

Lavender’s soothing and itch-relieving abilities are great for combatting dandruff. Additionally, Curry Leaf can also help control dandruff. It has anti-fungal properties that reduce dandruff and relieve itchiness.

Bruises and Burns

Tea Tree oil is best for speeding up the healing process of bruises. It has inflammatory and anti-fungal properties making it great for healing scratches and burns as well.

Constipation 

Black Pepper Oil has been said to help with our digestive system and colon, making it great for fighting constipation. It has been said to curb nausea and diarrhea as well.

Colds and Coughs 

Eucalyptus is well-known for its ability to treat coughs and other respiratory ailments. Add a few drops to some lotion and rub it on your chest and throat. Or even add some drops to boiling water and inhale the steam.

Additionally, Cedarwood and Frankincense are often used in combination for colds and coughs. They help loosen up the mucous and clear the lungs. 

Allergies

Lavender and Peppermint are natural antihistamines and have strong anti-inflammatory properties that can treat and relieve allergy symptoms. Also, they both can help open up the sinuses almost immediately!

Sore Throats 

Thyme has excellent antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties which make it one of the best oils for soothing a sore throat.

Ginger is also anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory, making it another good choose for sore throats.

Goodnights Sleep 

Both Lavender and Chamomile oil work wonders for a peaceful sleep. Not only do they both make you sleep they can help you fall asleep quickly and deeply.

Refreshing Bath 

When combined with a carrier oil like Sweet Almond or Jojoba, Grapefruit essential oil can be applied to the skin or added to a bath. It helps for balancing mood, treating acne and reduce stress. It is excellent for emotional children.

Lice 

Tea Tree oil is common for treating lice. Add a 5 drops to every ounce of shampoo. Or combine 3 tablespoons of a carrier oil like olive or coconut. Apply to the hair for 30 or 40 minutes, more if necessary and that should take care of the problem.

If you’re still asking yourself is aromatherapy safe for children? The answer is yes! However, there are some cautions you should take!

Essential oils care called that because they the extracted essence of a plants fragrance. The contain highly concentrated oils which can be toxic if swallowed and potentially harmful if put on skin directly.

  • Do not ingest or swallow essential oils. Store the oils in a safe place, out of reach from children.
  • Never apply directly to the skin. The oil must be diluted with a different safe oil or lotion.
  • Never diffuse the fragrance from the oil into the air with fire or flame.
  • Clean a water-based diffuser daily. If left sitting, mold and bacteria can grow.
